1. What tips you won’t share? What are the absolute Don’ts for a translator prepping for a new project?
Ana Lopo (AL): I’m always eager to share any tips and tricks I might have picked up along the way, as I believe in fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment for the translator community.
Regarding rates, profit details, and client names, I prefer to maintain a higher level of privacy. I only disclose such information when absolutely necessary or among colleagues with whom I share a comfortable professional relationship.
2. Which CAT tools do you favor and why? What’s the most troublesome word you had to deal with?
AL: Studio, memoQ and memsource, thanks to their simple UI and seamless QC tools. Word? Can’t think of any in particular.
Yet one of the most challenging projects I encountered had to do with veal meat. Discovering the names of all the meat parts posed an extremely tough challenge. I remember at the time I even went to the trouble of calling a butcher so I could ask for assistance🥩😄.
3. What led you to the translation realm?
AL: I was in law school at the time, and I had a group of friends that got me interested in subtitling.
I wasn’t entirely happy with the idea of pursuing a legal career, so I decided to give it a go. Upon discovering my knack for it, I made the decision to leave law school and enroll in a translation major.
